Diguisit Beach & Aniao Rock Formation
Hailed as of the best surfing spot in the Philippines, surely, Baler is one good place to explore up North. More than its wavy ocean and fine volcanic sand, Baler, Aurora has a lot to offer for both conservative and opportunistic travelers. If you plan having a visit soon, here are the 10 attractions must see in Baler. With about 5-6 hours travel from Manila, this place is an easy escapade from the hurly-burly city life. Check out here our Baler DIY Itinerary Guide for (3D2N).

Her undying heart for Filipinos earned her a lot of recognition and respect from local and international accolades. The house, a “Bahay Kubo” is a representation of her simplicity and beauty that stands over the years though this is just a replicate version. Beaches, Rock Formations, Falls
Baler bestowed with natural wonders that stretches and scattered in its perfect places and spaces. Below are some worthy places to visit.

4. Ampere Beach & Rock Formations
This place reminds me of Valugan Boulder Beach in Noth Batan, Batanes. Its rocky coastline resembles the boulders and its rock formation conveyed a diverse scenery that smoothen by the waves over time. Not a typical beach but you can still enjoy the view. A sunrise here was once a beautiful experience that perfectly matches the rocky landscape of Ampere Beach.
Entrance Fee: None
Activities: Swimming if low tide, sunrise viewing
Distance: 26 minutes’ drive from the downtown via Baler-Casiguran Road at 20.1 kilometers.

5. Dicasalarin Cove
Owned by the prominent Angara family, Dicasalarin Cove is a majestic secret paradise. Its isolated location is a perfect getaway for anyone who wants to enjoy a piece of nature – white beach, calm turquoise water, lush mountains and cliffs. Cottages are up for rent by the bay.
Entrance Fee: Php 300.00 for walk-in and Php 100.00 if you are a guest of Costa Pacifica, a prime resort also owned by the Angaras. Php 50.00 car parking.
Activities: Swimming and hiking at the lighthouse to get a 360 view
Distance: 31 minutes’ drive from the downtown at 15.9 kilometers.

6. Diguisit Beach & Rock Formations
Sands are not fine (actually, it’s a bit rocky) and waves are not strong but the serenity and tranquility will surely captivates you. Aniao Rock Formations and Diguisit Islets lay around the shore that adds more excitement and picturesque view in Diguisit Beach.
Entrance Fee: Depends on the resort but we took the free entrance right there at Diguisit Falls
Activities: Swimming
Distance: 19 minutes’ drive from the downtown at 10.6 kilometers.

7. Diguisit Falls
Diguisit Waterfalls is a landmark worth to visit. Waters coming from the mountaintop and perfectly located just beside the road across the Diguisit Beach. You can trek for 2-3 minutes and reach its chamber. Water is cold but too shallow for swimming. I remember someone passed by and poured that tumbler with water. Out of curiosity, I tasted it; it is cold and sweet.
Entrance Fee: None
Activities: Hike 2-3 minutes
Distance: 19 minutes’ drive from the downtown at 10.6 kilometers.

8. Sabang Beach
Enjoy Baler’s wavy coastlines with fine volcanic black sand and cold breeze from the Philippine Sea. Some hotels and resorts including restaurants and pubs are facing the infamous spot that is why it is one of the crowded place in Baler, morning and at night.
Entrance Fee: None
Activities: Swimming, Surfing (Php 300-400.00) + Instructor Guide
Distance: 0-50 meters from your respective hotels and around 2-3 minutes’ walk.

Other Emerging Attractions
Just before leaving back to Manila, make sure to take a glimpse in these areas as well.

9. Millennium Balete Tree
Old and striking Balete Tree (Millennium Tree) is a 600 years old tree standing in Maria Aurora, a town next to Baler. Famous in Filipino folklore, Balete is the house of mythical and supernatural creatures dwelling with powers that can harm normal people. Surviving over 6 centuries and still growing, Balete tree now stands as high as five-story building. Rumor has it that the tree is the largest and the oldest of its kind in Asia though not yet verified.

Activities: Picture taking
Distance: 18 minutes’ drive from Baler downtown at 12.7 kilometers.

10. Hanging Bridge
A steel-cable footbridge located just along Zabali Road and hanging over Tibag-Sabang River. It has been done major repairs due to frequent damaged during heavy typhoons. Though it isn’t intended for tourist’s attractions, Baler Hanging Bridge develops huge market due to its perfect location and view which made it popular. Today, souvenir’s shop are nestled around the area.
Entrance Fee: None
Activities: Picture taking
Distance: 7 minutes’ drive from Baler downtown at 1.7 kilometers.

Dicasalarin Cove, Baler, Aurora
We’re glad that before the ECQ (Enhanced Community Quarantine) implemented mid-March, we were able to set a travel going up North again and this time is in Baler, Aurora. I personally took the chance as well to enjoy my remaining days before going to new work, new office, new colleagues, and new desk. You’re right! I resigned from my previous job for five years and two months to take on another horizons and face new challenges in the industry I’m belong, improving my craft and hoping to contribute enough in the new organization I’m with. So it’s a brand new year, brand new job, brand new travel experience!

Baler is among the well-known destination up North and this is just 5-6 hours travel from Metro Manila. Not too far compared to Ilocos, Baguio or Sagada that will took about 8-9 hours travel time. My friends asked me to do our itinerary including looking and booking of hotel and some sort of other stuffs. This is a Baler DIY Travel Itinerary good for 3 days and 2 nights. We used our own car (sedan), a Kia Soluto for the transportation. We hit Skyway, down to EDSA, NLEX and SCTEX from Las Piñas at around 4:00AM and arrived earlier than expected at 8:30AM.

Baler is the capital of Aurora province, home of the first President of Commonwealth of the Philippines, Manuel L. Quezon. Baler founded in early 1600’s and despite its proclamation in 1951 as the province capital, Baler remains as a municipality up to this date. Even with its growing tourism industry, Baler still has the simple vibes of being in a province that is truly worth to feel. No huge malls, no skycrapers, and not so crowded and busy streets filled with people and vehicles.

Baler and other pueblo (towns) in Aurora offers numerous attractions from its rich history and cultural foundation up to scenic view of nature’s wonders. Baler faces the segment of the Philippine Sea that also meets the mother of all oceans, the great Pacific Ocean. Baler has been one of the subject of Spanish, American and Japanese occupation in the Philippines back in the days but now emerge as one of the surfing hub in the country.

Without further ado, I am sharing below details that might be helpful if you thinking to visit Baler one of these days or maybe right after the ECQ.

How Much Did We Spent
Since most of the travelers like me are very conservative when it comes to expenses and some are on a tight budget, let’s check first how much did we spent.

Our budget is Php 10,000.00. That would cover the accommodation, gas and toll fees, food, some environmental and entrance fees. But hey! Don’t react yet, that will be divided into five because I’m traveling with my friends and we are using our own car for the transportation. That means that we only have a Php 2,000.00 damaged per head. Economical isn’t it? We also allotted a budget for the groceries to lessen our food expenses and since we can actually cook our own food right there at the lodge, why not run for some groceries right? For your appreciation, see below summary of our expenses to help justifying what I have mentioned.

Place to Stay
You can't go wrong finding good places to stay in Baler because plenty of options are up which would always depends on your taste, preference, location and of course budget. But, for our budget friendly trip to Baler, we secured a family room, with basic needs we need like the toilet and the hot shower, free WI-FI, TV set for entertainment, air-conditioning system, a soft and comfy bunk-beds, and free use of kitchen (utensils, water, etc.) if you wanted to boast that sexy talent of yours in cooking but you need to pay for the gas at a minimal fee.
Ver Amare Place by Zen Room [Facade]
Ver Amare Place by Zen Room [Swimming Pool]
Thanks to Booking.com, I secured an accommodation at Ver Amare Place by Zen Room for Php 3,000.00 good for 3 days and 2 nights. Located in Buton Street Barangay Sabang, Baler, and just 20-30meters away from the Sabang Beach, a famous location for surfers. It’s also 5 minutes’ drive going to the downtown.  This place is quite generous in terms of space and the owner and their staffs are so accommodating. It’s a three story building and some rooms has its own patio and or balcony. In addition, it has a swimming pool, not too huge but good enough for those who doesn’t enjoy wavy and volcanic sandy beach.
Ver Amare Place by Zen Room [Family Room]
Private parking is available at Php 100.00 overnight. Cheap but safe and secured. You can check all other accommodation apps online or thru your mobile and you can compare prices. By the way, we paid it right away using a credit card. Convenience as it finest indeed.

Places to Visit
To be honest, we haven’t really followed our itinerary due to time constraint as usual but we still managed to explore some of the best attractions in Baler.
Baler Icon at the Downtown
In our first day, we had our historical tour all around the downtown before heading out to check-in by 2:00PM at Ver Amare Place to laidback from that long hour of travel and after having a glimpse of Baler with their historical landmarks.

→ Baler Church
→ Baler Icon
→ Museo de Baler
→ Quezon Plaza
→ Sabang Beach Front

On our day two, we took an early drive at around 5:00AM going to Ampere Beach in Dipaculao to catch the sunrise at 6:00AM before strolling around Aurora’s finest.

Ampere Beach, Dipaculao
→ Ampere Beach
→ Ampere Bridge
→ Diguisit Falls
→ Diguisit Beach and Aniao Rock Formation
→ Dicasalarin Cove
→ Dicasalarin Lighthouse
→ Hanging Bridge

We’ve got overwhelmed with what we have on our second day. And on our third and final day, we just enjoy the remaining hours before heading back to Manila but we made sure to revisit the Baler Church to pray and be thankful for the warm welcome.
Dicasalarin Cove [Cliff]
→ Doña Aurora Quezon’s Ancestral House
→ Sabang Beach
→ Ballete Millennium Tree
→ Pasalubong Center

Things to Note
→ Bring cash for other damage such as tour guide fee, surfing and souvenirs
→ If you wish to bring some groceries, choose light and easy to cook and ready to eat food
→ Bring bottled water and or tumblr. Stay away from dehydration. Drink your water!
→ Swimming attire is a must and bring that sandals with tight grip or closed shoes
→ Be responsible. Be kind. Be respectful. Do not leave your trash.

That concludes our trip to Baler. But I’m looking forward to go back here since I have unfinished business in here and that is to try surfing. Honestly, I’m quite tempted to take a crack, however, I don’t pretty much like the weather (it’s cold and I’m kinda not used to it). I just soaked out the view, watched the waves and let my thoughts blown away by the pacific winds. At least, I still have reasons why I need to go back and I’ll make that happen soon.

I hope this article helps you on your next plan to travel in Baler. You always have a choice, be a travel joiner and worry less or you can set a Baler DIY Travel Itinerary with friends. I’m looking for you guys having a piece of Baler and cheers to that plan!

Blue Soil Hills - Sagada

Sagada is our next stop right after Buscalan. Moreover, Sagada will be second to Baguio being the well-known destination up North especially in the Cordilleras. Unfortunately, not all travels meant to be perfect as planned due to unforeseen factors especially the weather and our desire to rests peacefully  (tulog is life)  for a day since we’ve got so much wooz during the tour in Buscalan. And yes, we’ve missed a lot of areas in our itinerary (haha).

Sagada is approximately two hours from Buscalan and one and a half from the capital, Bontoc. One of the municipality in Mountain Province and has become famous in recent years due to influence of local movies and series. Who would have forget the movie that made this place even more popular in thing so called “soul searching”? This movie has become a box office success after being showed in big cinemas nationwide that was initially intended for small screen independent film festival so to speak. That Thing Called Tadhana grossed Php 134 million in 2014 and started the “hugot” feels movies trilogies.

Sagada has a lot to offer for tourists especially for those who wants to escape a hot steaming temperature in the metro. It has consistent subtropical highland climate ranging from 17-20 degrees Celsius that is relatively low compared to what we have in Metro Manila and nearby provinces in North and South Luzon. Sagada is one popular place for adventurers and wanderers. Famous for its hanging coffins, Sagada can be a perfect place for nature hopping such as spelunking and mountain climbing.

Blue Soil Hills
Known as Kaman-utek in local term, this place is a worthy spot to visit while in Sagada. Normally, this is the last destination right after you hike for Marlboro Country or the Kamanbaneng Peak where you can see the “sea of clouds” that unfortunately, we have not done and experience.  Anyhow, at least we were able to visit this famous “Blue Soil Hills” after 30-45 minutes trekking. You won’t get lost after all since a trail path were made respectively to guide you directly going to the area. But better as well to ask for a tour guide for safety.

The blue-green hue of this landscape makes it different from its surroundings. Do not wonder so much why because science has an answer to that. The soil in this particular area has a rich copper sulfate content and actually safe for human exposure. Pitcher plant, grass and pine trees are still growing all around despite of its condition. Our tour guide actually prohibits us to come near close since it caused a lot of damage to the soil. In fact, that’s true. You can observed a slight erosion in some parts.

Sumaging Cave
Adrenaline rush! That is one thing to describe my experience going in and out of this cave. It’s actually my first time to do caving or spelunking so far and I thought it would not be that bad (haha). But hey! Good thing I’m always ready for situation like this and survived the trail. Climbing back down to see its hidden beauty was difficult and absolutely quicker in climbing up back. Entry and exit point is the same and that would same slippery experience but it’s totally fun! I’m noticing myself being competitive enough and became tremendously tougher. Because it’s typically cold inside, you can also observed a condensation or a smoke when you breathe (feels like a K-drama experience).
Phase 3 - Sumaging Cave
Sumaging Cave dubbed as “The Big Cave” because of its huge chamber that connects a total of 60 caves of the town. Inside is splendid rock formations that comes in different shapes. Major highlights as well is the stalagmite and stalactites that was formed millions of years ago.

Trail is divided into three phases. Phase 1 is to reach the bottom of the steep. A strange smell of bat-poop was vivid in this area. Phase 2 is where you can see now the rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites. Mandatory to remove those gorgeous sleepers, sandals and shoes to protect the landscape in this area as you go down to Phase 3 that called the tunnel. You can swim in a freezing cold water in chambers.

Being able to experience how tough it is, I would like to share some helpful tips and reminders that could probably help as you do your own Sumaging adventures too.

1. Wear light, tight and comfortable clothes.
2. A pair of sandals with tight grip rather than sleepers and or shoes is way better.
3. Headlight or a flashlight is good to have especially for those blind in the dark like me.
4. If possible, you can bring a light sling bag where you can safe keep your phone.
5. It is good to be kind but be careful when trying to be a superhero because it can possibly cause more chaos (you’ll know once you get in there)
6. Listen to your tour guide and do not leave your trash
